A RARE Bipartisan Agreement for Creating New Jobs
In an atypical vote that proved that bipartisanism is still possible in The US, the Senate approved and sent to President Obama a bill intended to stimulate employment by providing businesses with inducements to hire new workers. This action took place yesterday, Wednesday March 17th.
The legislation was approved by a clear majority – 68 to 29 which would provide employers an exemption from payroll taxes through the end of 2010 for employees they hire – and who have been unemployed for 60 days or more. The legislation also extends the Federal Highway Construction program and makes available $20 billion for infrastructure and public improvement projects (road, bridges, etc.).
A Rather Significant Breakthrough
The legislation DOES provide significant economic inducements for employers to hire new employees. Though we have a long way yet to go to get unemployment down to acceptable levels, all journeys begin with a single step; and this is an important step in the right direction. At a time where bipartisan politics paralyze most initiatives, 11 Republicans solidly backed this legislation and encouraged additional job-creations / economic enhancing initiatives. And there is talk to expand on the legislation by providing an additional $30 billion in corporate tax breaks and aid to small business which seems to have bipartisan support.
Washington is Finally Getting the Message
It appears that both Republicans and Democrats are acknowledging that the creation of jobs is America’s most pressing domestic issue. Apparently, many elected officials from both sides of the aisle, are getting the clear message being sent around the country by Americans… “focus on job creation!”
President Obama is scheduled to sign the legislation into law on Thursday before he heads off on his international trip. It is also comforting to see that the President has his priorities straight by delayed his international trip to address domestic needs. Healthcare may remain a partisan issue… but the need for creating new job opportunities for Americans is finally getting the attention and action it requires.
For the first time in a long time, this is cause for genuine optimism. So job seekers, get your résumés ready and hit the job campaign trail with confidence and positive expectations!
