10 Tips to Reduce the Time It Takes To Land a Job

According to a 2010 survey conducted by CareerBuilder, the time it takes the average job seeker to land a job in today’s job market is 6 months. CNNMoney reported that it takes job seekers approximately 30 weeks to find a new job today.  Reality and statistics provide clear evidence that it takes somewhere between 6 and 7 months to land a job and as long as a year to a year and a half  for candidates seeking positions in the six-figures.

The Good News

job-land-boost-chancesWhen I work with clients and when job seekers follow my campaign process for identifying and landing a job in today’s competitive job market, the average time is, in most cases, cut in half ; taking 2-3 months on average.  Executives land jobs in 3-6 months.

The magic is in the process and the effort put into it:  here are some statistics on those who have landed new jobs in the past 12 months working my campaign process.

  • Just over 50% secured full time employment in new careers / different fields.
  • Over 65% landed new jobs at the same or better pay than their prior positions.
  • One out of four relocated to a new area and not only secured employment but improved their lifestyle as well.
  • Over 20% of job seekers explore full-time entrepreneurial options and 45% explore supplemental (part-time) entrepreneurial ventures.

10 Tips to Reduce the Time it Takes to Land a Job – at the Pay You Deserve

  1. Operate with a peak performing, confident, and fearless mindset. What good is a world-class résumé in the hands of a depressed job candidate?
  2. Treat the process as a campaign NOT a job search.
  3. Have clear and concise job / career goals that align with your values.
  4. Identify your economic value; or organizational worth to a company.  You get hired for your value not because you need a job.
  5. Ditch the assembly line, look alike résumé (chronological obituary) and produce a high-impact document that communicates your ability to produce results better than other qualified job candidates.
  6. Create a reference portfolio; that is ‘unquestionably’ the secret weapon in your job campaign arsenal.
  7. Develop a written MAP (Meticulous Action Plan) with weekly tasks, goals, and measurements.  You can’t fix or correct what you can’t measure.
  8. Take massive action to take care of yourself first.  The greatest mastery in the world is the mastery of yourself.
  9. Identify the 3-4 job strategies (there are only 12-13 in total) that will work best and quickest for you; and spend 95% of your time on these strategies.
  10. Identify potential obstacles to getting hired quickly and DO NOT ignore them.  Rather, develop a strategy to neutralize / eliminate them.  Whatever you ignore will lead to a longer more painful job search.
